Purbeck Marine is a busy marine engineering company, based in Poole, Dorset, that has been trading for over 40 years. We sell new parts and equipment, repair, maintain and service all sorts of marine vessels from 10ft launches, up to 200ft+ yachts, powerboats, sail and fishing boats, superyacht tenders, survey vessels, ribs, cruisers, speedboats, and even military craft. We’re based in Cobb’s Quay Marina, Poole, Dorset and are ‘fully accredited’ to supply parts and labour to major defence contractors BAE Systems, Boskalis Marine Services, Pascoe International, Dorset Cruises and City Cruises London and Poole. We also carry out both services and instruction courses for the Royal Marines.

Gary Knowelden – Director, Marine Engineer and Admin.
Gary has been working in the marine engineering business for nearly 30 years, 9 years of which were at Sabre Engines Ltd. He has also worked on high performance racing and pleasure craft for 10 years. He has run Purbeck Marine since 2002, consistently ensuring only the highest standards for the customer.
Mike Warr – Director, Marine Engineer and Sales.
Mike started his advanced apprenticeship in 2003, and completed it in 2007, receiving a level 3 NVQ, and level 3 City and Guilds in marine engineering. Since then, he has completed numerous engine manufacture courses from various engine brands. He also strives for the highest quality service and work, always ensuring the satisfaction of a job well done. Mike has joined in the ownership of Purbeck Marine with Gary since 2010.
Gina Swaffield – Accountant & company secretary
Gina is our company Secretary and started working for Purbeck Marine in 2011. She does a great job running the accounting side of the business keeping our books straight and getting our tax returns and vat forms returned correct and on time. She does a fantastic job organising bills to be paid and inputting data so that we can pay all of our bills on time, she is also in charge of credit control and general office organisation.
Zac Singh – Marine Engineer
Zac started with Purbeck Marine when he left school in 2012 on a work experience basis, over the next year he showed increasing interest and improvement of skills so he was offered a full time job and an apprenticeship in marine engineering. He completed his level 3 NVQ and City and Guilds qualification in 2016 and is continuing to advance his techniques every week.
Darren Palmer – Marine Engineer
Darren joined the team early in 2018 and is a qualified Marine Engineer. He is mainly experienced in Volvo Penta engines and outdrives, which fills the gap in experience which we previously had. He has also worked for a main Volvo agent and multi-branded franchises including Yanmar, Nanni, Volvo Penta, Honda and Yamaha.
Keith Hooper – Part-time Marine Engineer
Keith started working part-time at Purbeck Marine in 2013, coming from a different marine engineering background than Gary and Mike he brings a different set of skills and knowledge to the team giving us a much broader approach to the trade and enables us to carry out jobs and tasks that we would normally have to turn away.
Andy Warr – Marine Engineer and Fitter
Andy started working part-time at Purbeck Marine in 2015, he came from an engineering and fabrications background and has spent his life on boats and general maintenance tasks. Andy brings a valuable different set of knowledge and skills to the team and always has a solution for any problem.
Jason Luxton - Parts Sales and Admin
Jason joined our team in 2019 and works closely with Gina in the office. He organises the ordering of parts and stock control, packing parts to send to customers around the UK and globally, and is also customer liaison and admin in the office.
Jeremy Cobley - Marine Engineer
Jeremy has been around boats from a young age, he is qualified in level 3 City and Guilds marine engineering, he has worked for a well known marine generator main dealership and also another local marine engineering firm working on outboards, inboards and sterndrives. He is fitting into Purbeck Marine well and is improving his experience and skills each week.
Purbeck Marine has purchased and manufactured over the years a large collection of tools, equipment and computer technology to carry out the most specialist of marine engineering jobs .
All our marine engineers have their own vans and comprehensive personal tool sets, which are carried from our base in Poole, Dorset anywhere around the UK.
We have computer systems to plug in and repair/setup some of the latest in common rail engines.
We have pullers (including hydraulic pullers) for propellers, couplings, injectors and fittings.
Hydraulic press for pressing out the most seized of bearings and shafts. The most state of the art cutlass bearing pullers on the market to cut down on labour costs and speed up completion times.
Most of our power tools including lights, drills drill drivers and angle grinders etc are battery powered to increase accessibility and increase ability to work on boats in the most rural of places, although we also have a reliable generator to give us 240v of power wherever required.
We also have in house our very own fuel injector testing machine, cylinder head valve seat cutters, a valve refacing machine, custom engine rebuilding tools.
Comprehensive service kits to give us the ability to carry out works on a massive variety of engines.
High quality oil and fuel pumps and large drums to replace oils, empty bilges and even drain/store fuel from tanks when works being carried out, and a custom built fuel polishing kit designed to remove water and debris from the tanks of any size craft.
We have a battery vacuum cleaner for cleaning up messes from small drillings and large vacuums that can even suck up fluids from bilges and areas inaccessible in other means to dispose of environmentally friendly rather than pumping overboard.
We have saws, pillar drill, and a lathe to enable us to carry out precision fabrications, tap and die sets metric, imperial, whit worth and bsp including some of the most unusual and rare threads used.
Compression testers and digital cameras/ bore scopes to test and inspect the engine internals and coolant pressure testers to check systems for leaks.
We have lifting facilities that are mobile along with certificated lifting strops etc. This is just a small portion of our impressive tool inventory.

Purbeck Marine was first established in 1979 by John Purdie and Keith Warren, they built the company by purchasing Wilkins and Wilkins Marine Services that has roots dating back pre war.
They made it their own and kept the company in Cobbs Quay Marina until Gary purchased it from John in 2002
In Febuary 2010 Mike joined Gary as an equal partner in the business, together they have built the business into what it is today, with 7 full time staff, 4 vans, a custom built facility in the Saltmarsh Building, Cobbs Quay Marina Poole. Their work is now recognised globally with regular trips anywhere in world supporting the superyacht industry, as well as many other commercial commitments all around the UK. They are also well established carrying out many types of works in all of the local marinas, yacht clubs and boatyards.
The business is now successfully expanding year on year.
